Expert Energy Tips: Recycling Old Appliances
How to Recycle Old Appliances
-
Call your local utility company and ask them what to do. They
will have details on collection companies and know the disposal laws in
your town. They may even offer a discount, or bounty program, when
purchasing a new ENERGY STAR appliance. In most cases, the unit will
need to be in good shape to meet the requirements for a rebate.
-
Donate the unit to charity. Charitable organizations like the
Salvation Army collect old appliances, rebuild them and then give them
to needy families. This is an option for units that are working, as
well.
-
Ask the company selling you the new product about disposing of the old one.
Some stores offer to collect an old appliance when they install a new
one. Large retailers have contracts with companies to ensure recycling
or proper disposal. Ask the store what happens to the appliance if you
opt to let them take it to ensure they do recycle.
-
Contact a collection service and ask them what they do with old, discarded appliances.
Some guy with a truck hauling garbage is just as likely to take it to a
landfill and dump it, which defeats the purpose. Look for a collection
agent willing to strip the unit and reuse the components or refurbish
it.
