Expert Energy Tips: Washing Machines

Washing machines are household necessities that have come a long way in the past 10 years. Newer models offer substantial savings on both energy and water bills which pay for themselves quickly over the long run.

Change your washing machine’s filter
Your washing machine has a filter, too, and needs to be changed on a regular basis to avoid problems such as clothes not drying all the way in the extra spin cycle or longer than usual cycle times.

  • Consider buying a dryer with a moisture sensor, which detect when your clothes are dry and turns off automatically.
  • Turn the temperature on your water heater to 120-degrees (F) and consider using a tankless water heater.
  • Wash full loads. Washers use about the same amount of energy for all load sizes, so fill up the load to avoid wasting energy.
